The Two Types of Game Titles
There are two types of game titles, here I talk about the pros and cons of both, I can't say one is better than the other and the type of title needed depends on the type of game being made.

Is It Possible To Add TOO MUCH Polish To A Game?
My game is a little Halloween lifesim in the same vein as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley with a stickerbook aesthetic. I called it Spooky Hollow, which is also the name of the forest it takes place in
I would recommend adding something at the end of your title if it's already a word. Examples below: Kost: Most Frost was Lost in Cosmos Kost: Wheel of Plane Kost: Starring the Nordic Fish Kost 2D KOST!: Kill On Sight, Tommy! Kost, the Fall of Kost and the Sixteen Character Title which Became much Longer when we Translated it into English.
But what the fuck is this analysis though? You just categorized game names into two obvious types: the ones that are descriptive of the game, and the one that are not. That’s like “There are two main types of phones: Samsung phones and phones that are not Samsung phones.” Literally what the fuck are you trying to analyze
Speaking of video game stories, am i the only one that plays RPGs for the gameplay first, story last? I mean, i liked Final Fantasy 5 more than 6, and that is saying a lot consideriong the 2 games!
You forgot titles like "The [X] of [Y]: [Subtitle] of [Z]", especially when those inserted words are arbitrary made up fantasy words of whatever lore they made that you have no chance of remembering unless you get super into a given game with this format, and scrolling these kinds of names in a list they just blur together
You cannot just give us the intro to a 40 minute well edited and entertaining documentary and say that's all you get! I want more! I'm subbing!
0:53 in celeste, you climb celeste mountain 1:00 stardew valley takes place in stardew valley just finished, realized the point is to make it be so that the title tells you nothing about the game ok but dont forget really really weird titles that have basically nothing to do with the game, like "i want" and "2" also theres games that have untitled in the title, like "untitled goose game" these cases are pretty rare but are pretty interesting
The main difference I hoped to point out, is some titles focus on describing gameplay, and others focus on describing game feel/theme. Naming your game something random would probably be unwise if that random name doesn't have something to do with the lore. :)
As a Scratch developer / RUclipsr, I must say, Scratch is filled with "generic platformers", which fall into pretty much all of the pitfalls you have mentioned! (And yet, they still get more views than the projects that are really complicated, cool, and are actually fun to play...)
Mine's called "Tower of Gremmvaud". It's loosely inspired by Tower of Druaga! And of course, it's...yet another roguelike! 😅
I have two different things that I made that their names are just snippets of the word "Animatronic". I have a character named Matronic and I have a series of post apocalyptic games that I'm working on called Animatron.
It's called Kost because it's going to kost money once it comes out
me about to make a map game... I think i should make a game engine
To be fair the game the wild dark is hard, but they start you out on a real strong power level, you can man fight a bear at level 1 with a stone tool, the issue is how much it hurt you and if you have the means to recover from that injury. Which to be fair the game does give you so many tools to make it easier if you as much as look, there's springs of water that you can harvest once per in game day that have good odds of giving useful potions to include the healing potion that fully recovers your health...
Yeah my first tileset worked great as well till I've added procedural generation to it. Got it all right later on my tileset_v4.
Is it like rogue or similar to rogue? What even is rogue? And what even is the differences between the two? Just call it a run based game with meta progression, which is not even like rogue...rogue did not have meta progression. Nothing makes sense everything is wrong with this video game classification and I hate it.
I saw Will You Snail at 1:32. Liked.
I mean, i just googled Kost in 2 seconds and i got this: "KOST is a commercial radio station in Los Angeles, California." So the word has been seen at least.
Inverted roguelike, even if you don’t want it as the title, should ABSOLUTELY be the first way the game is described in advertising material and descriptions. Instantly an interesting pitch.
Even very story focused games such as Death Stranding have interesting gameplay mechanics.
This is true! :D
Just be YandereDev
1:28 All words are made up
Ha. Lol
I am horrible at naming. The game I am planning to develop is literally called “Duck with A Gun”. Guess what it’s about.
I think that if a tutorial is a level then it should be mandatory
These are just game ideas but: 1. Dodge-Bullet (play as a shape on a grid and try to move on the grid to avoid getting hit by objects, namely bullets, similar to dodgeball. Think of something like Just Shapes & Beats but MUCH shorter) 2. Trashy Game (play as a deleted character script working with other deleted objects and characters to get to the top of (and escape) the recycling bin a game developer put you in. Puzzle-Platformer but you can use objects to build pathways and solutions to "unfinished" stages made by the aforementioned game dev) Number 1 is just a test game I would make but I see number 2 as a dream game I'll create once I have more experience But if any of you take these ideas-
0:57 to be fair, the company you work at in drg is actually... well... Deep Rock Galactic. So is kinda fitting.
so your two categories are "title that describes the gameplay in two words" and "everything else" ....i guess that's technically two.
Kost? I'm pretty sure it's something related to KDE. 😂
Doesn't matter, Uncle Ben. Super Lesbian Animal RPG is better than both of em.
Or... A title and a subtitle. You should maybe do that. Kost : Inverted Rogeplay. Sorry if I couldn't hear the name nicely enough I'm just it's not written or pronounced this way but I couldn't hear.
My game is about faces and grotesque mutations Facekiller 😀
Lists Vampire Survivors as example for descriptive title.... meanwhile Vampire Survivors: No vampires, no surviving.
@@MisterWeltfrieden ha ha. 🤣
Check your made up name game on google translate, Kost is literally a "Boarding house" in my language.
I have a game idea that I don't have enough abilities to make right now, but I would title it "Un-cap the Stan". The world is an anarcho-capitalist's version of a utopia ( Ancapistan ), which works kinda like a modern day wild west. Your goal is to start a company and turn it into a country with another ideology. Maybe a commune, a feudalist monarchy or something else
Elden Ring boss fight in a nutshell
I'm specifically calling my indie game "Maiden Voyage" because it gives off an artsy vibe and is actually a pun: The player character is a maiden - Kore - going on a voyage across multiple different regions to get each one's McGuffin, then [spoilers]. It might be another 2D platformer, but Kore can sit on defeated enemies or specific spots to imitate their abilities, a la Kirby. These are called Musages, since sitting around can be what a muse does sometimes, and it ties into the more artistic vibe of the title nicely! It's also my first indie game! I've been planning it for years, sure, but it's meant to be my springboard into the limelight - a literal maiden voyage for me.
I think my game name sits somewhat in the middle of the two? It's called Cold Broadcast, a FNaF fangame taking place in a winter themed kids TV show film set. temperature is one of the main mechanics of the game, so that's where the first bit comes from, and broadcast is kinda self explanitory. Idk what group this would really fit in because it hints at what the gameplay and context will be without completely giving it away.
Your game is in the second category.
Who hurt you
Kost means broom in Danish
Why does this describe me
also make sure that the player absolutely needs a weapon/armor, that is only a 0.0000001% chance to drop from an already rare enemy!
I feel attacked XD
I just realized that from a categorical standpoint this video is meaningless. After all it is pretty obvious that there are 2 classes of names, those that describe and those that dont. Given that, I wonder what actually distinguishes the 2 types. Which type has more words? Are they more likely to be a verb, a noun, or an adjective?
It is quite obvious once pointed out. But most people don't realize these clear differences until they are actually pointed out. More importantly is how those differences can effect the first impression of your game. Thinking about these 2 styles can help developers consider what they want to communicate to potential players with their title, mechanics or theme? Gameplay or story? Understanding the differences logically can help, even if they can just feel out a good title intuitively, perhaps pointing these things out isn't helpful to everyone, but I would wager it is to most. :)
If you think your game will stand out just because of the story, you are wrong. Very few will care about your story. Interesting mechanics are much more marketable.
The story being a selling point ONLY works in walking simulators, and RPGs, where the story itself is a sort of "mechanic". (Especially so in RPGs where a player makes choices that affect said story.)
Interesting mechanics? PFFFFFFFT People like visual novels, people are too much babies any more to be any good at games. Make sure your story is the only good part of the game cause that’s the only part players are going to care for Don’t waste time doing any other part of the game as people won’t appreciate anything other than your amazing and unique story

I do think there is an interesting middle case. While the name Stardew Valley doesn't describe the game literally, it does do a good job of capturing the tone and feeling of the gameplay. On the other hand, to me the name Celeste does evoke the style and atmosphere of the game but doesn't really have any correlation to the gameplay.
I'm in type 2
I clicked on this video and got a twix ad about it not mattering if you choose left or right
